After a few starts and stops, Spring has finally come to our area. We are welcoming more of our warm weather members every day. Mike and I are finally able to count ourselves as full time residents of our beautiful Cashiers-Glenville area.
In March, I attended the North Carolina Lake Management Society meeting in Greensboro. Interesting programs with the opportunity to see how other lakes are managing their water issues. Understanding other lakes and their issues around water quality gave me a new appreciation for our signature water quality program. FLG’s program continues and we have added new members to the team. Spring 2014 SE Regional NCLM Conference will be held March 26th-28th in Asheville.
Your Friends of Lake Glenville Board has been extremely active this year during the fall and winter months. In September, we developed our FLG Strategic Plan for 2013 and are implementing our goals. We identified several areas for needed action and attention:
Repairing our Membership Program. This includes a total repair of our data base and developing a new Corporate membership. Updates to member profiles are now part of a membership process that will help FLG to better serve and communicate with members. If we make errors, please give us a small grace period to work on perfection. Our new corporate program began with a great start. Hattler Properties became our first new corporate member and gave FLG a $1000 sponsorship for the Fireworks on the Point. We hope to add additional corporate members this year.
Early Execution and Planning of our Signature Events. These include Groovin on the Green with Hurricane Creek, Fireworks on the Point, and our Members only Summer Social. The goal was to deliver the plans and communicate early to our members via the newsletter. You will find articles, photos and invites to our Signature events in the newsletter. Our Chairs:
Groovin Dotty Ennis
Summer Social Sandi and Ike Eichhorn
Fireworks on the Point Juan Milcjuans
Our organization could not exist without individuals volunteering their time and talents.
Duke Relationships and 2013 Construction This year will be a challenging one for Lake Glenville boaters and owners. Duke construction of the new swimming area in November 2013 will require a overall 16 foot drop in lake levels by end of October. Please see the newsletter article and note the Duke speakers for our June meeting.
We have a new Duke Lake Glenville Services Manager, Kevin Holland. Kevin is a 18 year Duke employee from Franklin who has IT and mapping experience. Larry Lively and I will be meeting regularly with Kevin. Our former Lake Manager, Lisa Leatherman has a new role. She is now District Manager, Nantahala Area, Government and Community Relations.
A special “Thank You” goes to Juan and Loures Milcjuans for their photographs of our Groovin’ and breakfast meetings in 2012.
It has been a pleasure for me to serve with the members of our Board and we all look forward to a successful 2013 year for Friends of Lake Glenville.

The final Member Breakfast of the 2012 season was held at the Mountaintop Lake Club, with a good crowd in attendance. Newly elected FLG President Carolyn Franz greeted the attendees and outlined recent developments, including a Water Quality Team meeting, meetings with the Duke lake manager, and plans for a Winter Newsletter. Outgoing President Howard Austin was given a beautiful lake photo as a memento for his years of service to the FLG. Stephanie Edwards, the newly arrived Executive Director of the Cashiers Chamber of Commerce gave a very informative discussion of the Chamber, who it is, how it relates to other groups such as the Merchants Association and the Village Council, and what it has as new plans and initiatives.

At the Board meeting after the Annual Meeting at Trillium Golf Club, the Board elected Carolyn Franz as President, Juan Milciunas as Vice President, Mark Newman as Secretary, and continued Ed Mohler as Treasurer. Newly elected Board member Gary Wright and Larry Lively, filling the unexpired term of Ken Kitchens, joined the group for the first time.

Since most FLG communications are being done electronically, please send an email to “flg@friendsoflakeglenville.com” if you are not getting regular notes from the FLG. If you are one of the few members to not use a computer, please discuss with Carolyn Franz some alternative method of communication that can work for both parties.

It is disappointing to announce Thursday July 19, 2012, that the Board of the Friends of Lake Glenville has concurred with the opinions of the Social Committee and agreed that the 2012 Summer Social event should be cancelled. The basic issues are too many expenses, too few reservations, too few volunteer helpers, and no practical way to bridge those gaps. No one of those problems was probably insurmountable, but together they became a challenge we could not overcome in the next nine days.

For many recent years, the event was largely put on by a group that may have numbered over two dozen, with much of the food provided by them at no cost. We are indebted to them for doing such a great job for so long and maybe only now realize how Herculean their efforts were. Transitioning to this year where most of those services or products were to be provided by outside vendors, the cost rose sharply. Even raising the price members were being asked to pay or perhaps because of it, there were only 17 reservations as of yesterday, rather than the 60-80 needed to avoid having the FLG itself mostly subsidize the event. It became fiscally prudent to cancel the event.

At the two remaining breakfasts and this fall and winter as preparations for the 2013 Season begin, we the members of the FLG need to discuss among ourselves what is to be expected from this organization, both with regard to its basic purpose to “Protect and Preserve” Lake Glenville and how social activities fit in to that mandate. No matter what mix of activities we choose going forward, all require volunteers to make them happen, another piece of the puzzle to solve.

If you have realistic constructive suggestions, please communicate them to a Board member or by email to “flg@friendsoflakeglenville.com”. Replies will be aggregated and passed on to the Board and/or any appropriate committees. Remember the two remaining upcoming Member Breakfasts, on Saturday August 25th at Trillium and Saturday September 15th at the Mountaintop Lake Club.

The fireworks that have been held annually around the July 4th holiday for many years will again happen, this year on the evening of Tuesday July 3, beginning around 9 p.m., or whenever it is sufficiently dark. The fireworks will again be shot from The Point at Glenville Lake and will be viewable from on the lake as well as the eastern shore along Highway 107 and have again been facilitated by StuartHall and the Glenville Navy.
As in recent years, the primary funding of the fireworks has come from The Friends of Lake Glenville, Trillium, Signal Ridge Marina, The Pointe at Glenville Lake HOA, and a small number of private donors.
This year’s fireworks may be a bit grander than in recent years, but the limited sources of funding and the uncertainty of who will donate each year remain a problem and hold back enhancing the shoot and even securing a fireworks vendor and a date for the shoot. The “July 4th” fireworks are a community event and needs community support. If a homeowners association business or community group wishes to help with the fireworks, please contact the Friends of Lake Glenville at flg@friendsoflakeglenville.com or leave a message at 828-743-9494.

Please RSVP yes or no preferably to the FLG email address flg@friendsoflakeglenville.com. You can also call Ed and Peg Mohler at 743-3796. Unlike some of our venues, Trillium has a definite deadline for reservations, in the middle of next week, so please respond soon. An early and prompt email response will also help our dedicated telephone caller Carolyn Chabora (Thank you for a second season’s hard work!) make fewer calls.

Keep Saturday September 10th 2011 at 8:30am on your calendar too. The last Member Breakfast of the season will again be lakeside at the Mountaintop Lake Club on Fenley Forest Trail.

On Saturday July 2nd 2011, about 9pm or so when it is dark, the now annual Lake Glenville fireworks will be shot from The Pointe at Lake Glenville. The fireworks this year will again be professionally done by East Coast Pyrotechnics and are expected to be enhanced over last years due to more support from local sponsors, including the Friends of Lake Glenville. Viewing from the lake on a boat or on the 107 shoreline should again be great fun!

On Saturday July 16th, the FLG Grand Summer Social will again be held at the Lake Club clubhouse, from 5:00-7:00pm. The event is open to all 2011 FLG members. If you have forgotten to renew your membership, there is still time to do so and enjoy what has recently been the high point of the FLG social season.

A new event for the FLG will be “Groovin’ on the Green with the Friends of Lake Glenville” Friday evening July 22nd 2011. This will be our opportunity to showcase the FLG and make sure the larger Cashiers-Glenville community knows about us and our efforts to “Protect and Preserve” Lake Glenville. Entertainment will be by Hurricane Creek Band, a local favorite. A big turnout by FLG members will mean lots of knowledgeable people to tell the audience about our great organization.

Please also note that the Annual Meeting will be later than usual this year, on Saturday August 20th 2011, hosted by Trillium Links and Lake Club. The speaker will be announced at a later time.

Summer is just around the corner, after a long cold icy winter and a wet spring. The lake is surprisingly full as this is written, only about a foot below what most of us think of as “full pool” (98 on Duke’s scale, with 100 being up in the woods). Boats are coming out of storage, docks are being repositioned, and “cabins” closed for the winter are reopening.

New Board Member and Acting Social Chairperson Carolyn Franz has two initiatives set to kick off. The first is our first membership drive in a while, driven by suggestions from the survey made two winters ago and from comments by members and non-members alike. One of the most public components will be the FLG sponsorship of a Groovin’ on the Green event in July (see details under “Social Events”), a chance to have a good time and promote better visibility for our group. The second change will involve the Member Breakfasts and a new venue for two of them, at the High Hampton Inn on 107 down in town. We hope to see many of you at as many of the breakfasts as you can fit into your schedules and hope you’ll bring friends along as potential new members. Be sure and renew your membership so you can attend the signature social event this summer, the Summer Social again to be held at the Lake Club.

The signature water quality program continues. Doug Odell and Ken Kitchens and a few dedicated volunteers restarted water sampling in March, and Don Hansen and our water sonde will be out getting more detailed information about the lake and its condition soon. Both endeavors need more volunteers to optimize their chances of monitoring the lake and making sure it stays in good shape.

Other programs besides water quality and social events are being considered, but suggestions from members are always welcome. flg@friendsoflakeglenville.com or a phone call to any Board Member are good ways to pass your ideas along.

Due to personal and family demands, two of our Board Members have recently resigned, and the two vacancies need to be filled. If you have time and can be available relatively year round, the icy dead of winter probably excepted, please telephone or email me to learn about what the Board does and how you might fit in. We are a Working Board, with the chance to “Protect and Preserve Lake Glenville” being a great reward.
