To Glenville, Cashiers, and surrounding communities:

Weather permitting, the Glenville Community will conduct their 13th Annual Fireworks Shoot on Lake Glenville next Friday evening, July 2, 2010, at about 9:30pm. As in years past, the fireworks will be ignited from The Point at Lake Glenville on the west side of the lake just north of Trillium. Owing to changes in North Carolina State laws, Glenville has engaged East Coast Pyrotechnics to conduct the Shoot. As a result, this will mark the first time that performance-grade Class “B” (1.3G) fireworks will be incorporated into the show. The 3″ mortars to be used in the show will rise 300′ versus the 175′ rise from the previously used Class C mortars. The venue has been inspected and approved by the Jackson County Fire Marshall, and a fire truck will be on site during the program.

Land-based spectators typically park at the Hamburg Baptist Church and view the Shoot from the shoreline on the East side of the lake. The Shoot will commence at 9:30 PM and last about 15 minutes. Organizers will attempt to conduct a music program to precede and accompany the fireworks program. In the interest of spectator safety, boats should remain 150’ from the shore during show set-up and ignition. Land-based spectators should remain 300’ from the shoot site. Remember that a new North Carolina law is in effect requiring boat operators under the age of 26 to hold an safe boating permit.

The fireworks program has been made possible by a profound, cohesive effort put forth by Lake Glenville clubs, organizations, and businesses as well as individual Glenville residents. We invite everyone to come to the Lake next Friday evening to celebrate the best traditions of our Country and Community. In addition to the sponsors and financial supporters of the event, it would not have happened without the tireless efforts of Stuart Hall. The community owes a big “Thank you” to him and his Glenville Lake Navy who put on the first 12 shows.

For more information, check the FLG web site (www.friendsoflakeglenville.com) or call Stuart Hall at 828-743-1100 or FLG President Howard Austin at 828-743-9494.

The State of North Carolina has a new Boating Safety Law mandating a boating safety course for all boat operators under age 26. See http://www.boat-ed.com/nc/course/p4-3_whomayoperate.htm for more details.

Please mention this new law to full time and seasonal residents of our area who may have children or grandchildren who are used to operating their boats during visits, as well as to renters who may have no way to know about this new law until they get stopped by a Wildlife Officer and get an expensive ticket that could sour their whole vacation. As tourism is already sagging in the down economy, we don’t want this as an added burden. North Carolina Wildlife offers courses that lead to the necessary certification. The Wildlife web site also mentions that similar courses from other states will be recognized under certain circumstances.

Let’s all help promote boating safety education and also ensure that we have happy boaters on Lake Glenville this season.

The snow has disappeared, the trees are budding and the flowers are blooming, and the Friends of Lake Glenville 2010 Summer Season is about to begin. Please go to the Social page and put the various breakfasts and other social occasions on your schedule to attend. The breakfasts will have varied venues this year and a new start time, 8:30am, so you will have more time to enjoy your family, guests, and the lake afterward. The most attended event every year, the Grand Summer Social, will again be at The Lake Club in July.

Please also think about volunteering to help at one of the events, with lake and stream water testing, or as a committee member or even as a Board Member. If there are activities the FLG should be undertaking or events with which the FLG should be associated, send us an email or call any of the Board Members with your ideas and suggestions. This is YOUR organization devoted to Protecting and Preserving Lake Glenville.

After nearly the wettest calendar year on record, with the lake at midsummer levels as winter set in, The Friends of Lake Glenville look forward to 2010 and the opportunity to again enjoy the clear mountain air and the pristine waters of the lake with family and friends.

Keep an eye on this site as the programs and gatherings for 2010 are announced. If you got a survey last fall, as part of a statistical sample of lake-side and near lake property owners and have not sent it back, please complete it and send it back so your opinion gets counted and any ideas you have get considered.

For those of you who do not spend the winter in the mountains, please check out the Gallery page and photographs of Winter in the Mountains by Barbara Short.
